Talking to: Marmalade Lion, small business
About: products that make life easier with young children, stand the test of time, are good for the environment and most importantly, make you smile
Why: a passion for textiles, love of children and a desire make an impact all encompassing a very personal tribute
Marmalade Lion started when Alicia, a mum of two, experienced in business development and product management specific to the textiles industry and now small business owner, identified a gap in the market for Australian based, practical, long lasting and sustainable children's products.
Founded in 2016 Marmalade Lion delivers products that are high quality, good for the environment and most importantly, fun whilst making life with young children a little easier for busy parents. The growing range, sold online, includes activity mats, couch covers, pram liners, smocks, change and splat mats all made with high quality fabric in Australian prints and designs.
Whilst only in its infancy the concept for the business was many years in the making. Alicia registered the business in 2010 after she and her Mum had an idea. Alicia says "it was the spawn of an original idea my mum and I had to create beautiful bespoke baby hampers and deliver them to hospitals. Now the business is about creating beautiful, functional, sustainable products that stand the test of time". The playful business name stems from the concept of Marmalade being sweet and Lion being strong.
As a small business client at O'Brien's the team has advised Alicia in business structuring, implementation of and training in the Xero platform, financial reporting, tax, BAS, GST, cashflow management and trademarking. All of these being critical factors in the early stages of a small business journey when many fail.
Much of Marmalade Lion's success has been due to the commitment to embracing social media and influencer marketing. Alicia puts a lot of time into their Facebook and Instagram platforms including quality photography and they have collaborated with some high profile celeb mums including Giaan Rooney and Lara Worthington.
As more players establish in the market O'Brien's will continue to partner with Marmalade Lion to advise the business throughout the growth phase allowing the business to make strategic business decisions based on clear financial data and business performance.
